Distribution: from eastern Africa to southern Japan, Hawaii, Marquesas, Rapa and Lord Howe. It is one of the most common and easy-to-spot butterflyfish.
Replaced by looking-like Chaetodon fasciatus in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
