Distribution: from the Red Sea and South Africa to Southern Japan, Hawaii, the Tuamotu Islands and New Caledonia.

Juveniles are brown with thin vertical bars, females are brown or yellow, males are dark-gray or dark-brown with a white head and a red-orange back.
