Partir faire du palmes-masque-tuba en Islande? Le « pays de feu et de glace » est en effet une destination snorkeling surprenante ! Mais saviez-vous que ce pays abrite des spots uniques, sans égal ailleurs sur la planète? Avec ses fissures tectoniques remplies d’eau glaciaire, ses rivières chauffées par la géothermie et ses écosystèmes marins côtiers, l’Islande est une destination singulière pour les amateurs de snorkeling et de plongée. Bien sûr, l’eau y est froide voire glaciale, mais les incroyables paysages sous-marins, avec leurs couleurs et lumières féériques, vous feront vite oublier ce « détail ».
L’Islande est connue dans le monde entier pour le snorkeling dans d’immenses failles géologiques, créées par les mouvements tectoniques des plaques nord-américaine et eurasienne.
Remplies d’une eau de glacier filtrée pendant des décennies par les roches volcaniques, elles offrent des paysages aquatiques exceptionnels et sans pareil.
La faille de Silfra, sans conteste le spot le plus célèbre d’Islande, est souvent classée parmi les 10 plus beaux spots de plongée au monde, et constitue un immanquable si vous visitez l’Islande. Les failles Davidsgja et Nesgja, moins connues et fréquentées, constituent également d’excellentes options.
Si le nombre de spots adaptés à la randonnée palmée est plutôt limité en Islande, certains centres de plongée offrent des excursions dans la cheminée géothermique de Strytan, les sources d’eau chaude du Lac Kleifarvatn, ou encore la rivière Litlaa.
L’Islande connaît un climat froid, avec des étés frais et sans saison sèche. Le temps peut varier considérablement au cours d’une même journée. Juin, juillet et septembre sont les mois les plus chauds, avec une température moyenne de 13°C (avec des pics en journée à environ 20°C), et janvier le mois le plus froid (moyenne de 1°C).
De fin novembre à janvier, l’obscurité de l’hiver limite les activités à l’extérieur, et les températures peuvent chuter à -20°C. Pour toutes ces raisons, le pic de saison touristique est très concentré en Islande, de mi-juin à août.
Le snorkeling en eau froide (à Silfra, la température est constamment entre 2 et 4°C) demande un équipement spécialisé, composé de sous-vêtements chauds et d’une combinaison étanche.
